Hyundai’s Sonata breaks into 2018 with a refresh on several key components that improve this already popular midsize sedan. The Sonata provides convenience, comfort, and reliability in one stylish package, making it a car that checks off numerous must-haves on a lot of people’s lists.
The Sonata’s appearance has always been considered trendy, but some of the exterior changes with the 2018 version elevate its look even more. A cascading grille gives the front end some serious presence, emphasized by new, narrower headlights and a new hood design. The back end has been tweaked too, with narrower taillights, a redesigned rear fascia, and a bigger trunk lid. The interior has seen some changes, too – both the steering wheel and the center stack have seen a redesign for 2018. With seven different models to choose from, you can customize the Sonata to your heart’s content, both inside and out.
Under the hood, it is all about performance and reliability. A 2.4 liter (L) I-4 engine on the SE, SEL, Sport, and Limited models delivers 185 horsepower (hp) and 178 pound-feet (lb-ft) of torque. The Eco model’s 1.6 L Twin-scroll Turbo I-4 engine puts out 178 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. The Sport 2.0 T and the Limited 2.0 T both have a 2.0 L Twin-scroll Turbo I-4 engine that gets you an impressive 245 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mileage estimates for the SE are 25 miles per gallon (mpg) when cruising on Grand Forks streets, 26 mpg on Grand Forks ND highways, and 29 mpg combined. Fuel tank capacity (in gallons) is 18.5 across the board for all 2018 Sonata models. There a few different drivetrains depending on which model you choose, with a 6-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC technology being standard in the SE, SEL, Sport, and Limited. The 7-speed EcoShift Dual Clutch Transmission with SHIFTRONIC (DCT) is standard in the Eco, and an 8-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC comes standard in the Sport 2.0 T and the Limited 2.0 T.
Hyundai has always put an emphasis on safety in their vehicles, and we at Eide Hyundai are happy to report that this is still the case in the newest Sonata. Features like Blind Spot Detection (BSD) with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, a rearview camera, the Vehicle Management Stability (VMS) system, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with individual tire pressure indicator come standard in all Sonata models. Some optional safety features include Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), and Automatic High Beam Assist.
Most people in the market for a new car these days want to find a car that offers comfort and convenience in one affordable package. The 2018 Sonata offers all of that. A hands-free smart trunk means you will be able to open the trunk even if your hands are full. The Proximity Key entry with push button start feature lets you unlock and open your car without having to set your groceries/luggage/kids down. Steering wheel mounted audio and Bluetooth controls let you handle your music and phone situations without becoming distracted. Dual automatic temperature control means that you and your passengers won’t be fighting over being too hot or too cold anymore - everyone can ride in comfort. A 60/40 split flat-folding rear seat means that you can easily free up some extra storage space whenever you need it.
There is nothing not to love about Hyundai’s 2018 Sonata. That is why when people come to us searching for a midsize sedan that is reliable, affordable, and handsome looking, we point them in the right direction.
